It would be great to have some kind of test to flush out obvious failures, for example failing to be register as an jupyter server extension, jupyter lab extension, and jupyter notebook extension.

We are doing it for jupyter-server-proxy, and we could do the same in this project for the oldest python version supported + the latest for example.
