I just read the description of the new feature and that the driver is injecting black while video is muted.

What is the expected behavior of the proposed feature? What is the scenario this would be used?
I'd like an option where Powertoys doesn't inject just black when muting the video but uses the last frame of the video feed. This way the others still see me but my video is just not updating. This is not about faking a connection brown out. It just feels more natural than 'blacking out'. A caption with modifiable words like 'be right back' or simply 'brb' at the bottom could be useful too.

How would I use it. With OBS I have a screenshot of myself that I can use when

  • I'm eating during an informal meeting
  • when my kids or wife come in but I don't want to drop the call

Alternatively being able to set a still image instead of the black would be cool.

You can set a still image in settings :) It engages when you toggle the camera

Nice, I'll check it out. But using the last frame would keep it up to date without any configuration.
Thanks for updating the issue!

we used this optional in the early stage of development and the user experience is far from ideal because the last frame may look really weird.
It will be better to provide a nicer default, like an image showing the same camera-off symbol we use in the toolbar.

Preferable to "last frame" it would be nicer to have a "take still image" button so we can choose which one to use.

That way we can use a still image with the same clothes and background as the live video.

As you say we can do this the long way around by bringing up settings, etc, but thats a lot of steps to do when you want to just "Camera off"

I know this is closed, but suggestion seems reasonable. Maybe tweaked like samliddicot wrote above. Having placeholder from earlier is ok, but as already said - same clothes, same background thing... I could use the profile pic or something, but wouldn't seem as natural to others.

I don't think we'll be fixing this due to #21473 and will be removing VCM in the pending future with Win11 having the muting feature.

@crutkas crutkas closed this as not planned Won't fix, can't repro, duplicate, stale Nov 1, 2022
