When Thunderbird Monthly upgrades, it opens a What's New page like this one:

https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/135.0/whatsnew/?locale=en-US&version=135.0&channel=release&oldversion=134.0

This page goes to a custom 404 message indicating the page does not exist. We need to build out the What's New for the new monthly channel releases.

These aren't supposed to be opening What's New pages at all.

@coreycb Do we have a bug open for this behaviour?

@Sancus I don't think we have a bug open for this.

@judecooks Can you help me understand how to reproduce this? Where did you install from? What operating system are you running on?

When I upgraded from 134.0 to 135.0, a tab opened for:

https://start.thunderbird.net/en-US/monthly/?uri=/thunderbird/start/&locale=en-US&version=135.0&channel=release&os=Linux&buildid=20250131225331

I have a similar issue. After upgrading to the latest stable version, I get a website opened as follows:

link: https://www.thunderbird.net/en/thunderbird/135.0/whatsnew/?locale=en&version=135.0&channel=release&oldversion=134.0

Version: 135.0 (aarch64), originally installed through https://formulae.brew.sh/cask/thunderbird, updated lastly through the app itself, sometimes before through brew. Happened with the previous upgrade 133->134 as well.

Thanks for the additional information. It looks like brew pulls directly from our cdn artifacts so I'm guessing this is a bug in our builds.

Can you check and see if your mailnews.start_page.override_url preference is set? In my case it's not, but I assume it is set to something like the what's new URL in your case. Settings->Config Editor and paste mailnews.start_page.override_url into the search.

I'm sorry, it does in fact open a what's new browser link for me on Linux as well. I was looking for tab in Thunderbird. So that's good, I can recreate and will work on a fix.

Yes, it seems to be a bug in the builds as my two latest updates were definitely through the app itself, and it was showing correct post-update pages in my default browser (FF 😃) a few versions before (at least for the last year).

I have no value for this set.
